I might have of answer for those who have had no success so far BUT it entails opening the unit and possibly doing some soldering. Here's my experience:

I found this post after experiencing the "no satellite" problem with my etrex Legend HCx. Nothing I did worked. I reflashed the GPS firmware probably 20 times. Each time was successful, but it didn't fix the issue. I was unable to reflash the chipset software. I ended up with an error message "The GARMIN device is not responding" about 13% into the procedure. Since I had my unit apart anyway, on a whim I decided to check the internal battery because the unit's clock was always starting at 4:45 whenever I turned the unit on. The voltage was very low (0.25V). I desoldered the cell, and briefly applied 3V to the terminals to charge it up past 2V. Once I soldered the cell back in, the unit immediately acquired satellites upon rebooting. I was even able to successfully update the chipset firmware to the latest version (I had 2.40, latest was 2.80). I may or may not need a replacement cell, but at least I now know the source of the problem.

I think a bad internal battery may be the source of the problem for those who are unable to update the chipset software. It worked for me. Now I just need to find out the part number of the internal battery in case my battery really is bad. It may have simply needed a charge.

If you find that your internal battery voltage is low, then remove the internal battery before attempting to charge it. DO NOT apply an external voltage to the battery terminals while it's still soldered to the GPS circuit board, or you most likely WILL cause further harm. Additionally, first remove the main batteries (2 AAs in my case) or battery pack before doing any soldering on the GPS circuit board. Once the internal battery is removed from the circuit board (make notes of how it was mounted so you can put it back in correctly), apply 2 or 3 volts to its terminals for maybe a minute at most, observing correct polarity with your voltage source ( + to +, - to -). Check to see if the battery voltage is restored (not sure what the nominal voltage is but mine eventually stabilized at about 1.45V). If the voltage is OK, then resolder the battery back on the circuit board. With any luck, when you restart your GPS, it will try to acquire satellites.

Using the web updater I upgraded from Software Version 3.7 to 4.0. I also selected to install the otional update for the chipset. However, the version of the chipset remained 0.00 . Also repeating the process did not resolve the problem.
Then I tried the chipset updater from this page. It doesn't work either. After identifying the gadget it says that something is wrong and the the data cannot be transferred.

Thank-you for posting it only took about 2 minutes using your website.
Have a good long weekend

Thanks for the hints, but after downloading Software Version 4.0 and chipset 3.0 I still get the eternal Acquiring Satellites. Yesterday I was in the middle of an open golf course and after about an hour the satellite info was downloaded. Today I've been trying for 4 hours with no success. Do yo have anything else up your sleeve?

Thanks Geko,

You saved me $268.00 AUD. Garmin want to sell me a refurbished unit and I wasn't going to pay.
Your a legend.

Thanks Gecko.

You probably didn't expect your post to be still useful after this many years...
I just had the same problem with my 60CSX. I was riding my motorcycle and tried to turn the backlight on. With my gloves I couldn't really feel the little push button and I pushed on it for too long I guess... So my GPS turned itself off and when I turned it back on I couldn't aquire satellies. Couldn't wait for Garmin to open in the morning so I looked on the web and I found your post thanks to Google.
I used the Garmin Webupdater... Worked find. But to get the full update it's a 2 step process. First the software is loaded, then the chipset. took a total of 5 minutes.
As of Jul 11, 2011, the Software version is 4.0 and the GPS and the GPS SW Version (chipset) is 3.00s.

Thanks again,

Eric.

Hey Geko.
I have read your post and was extreme excited and possitive.
I checked the Chip set Version and sure enough it was 0.00.
Tried both manual and webupdater something else must be going on as my computer say it is connected when you look under device manager, the GPS unit says that it is connected to the computer but when I try to do the update I keep getting a window saying:
Device is not responding.
Check the device interface option is set to Garmin. (yes)
The cable is connected. (yes)
The unit is turned on. (yes)
so i can not even try do update.
Can you or someone please help me.
Getting very frustrated.
Garmin will not even try to fix them here in Australia.
Buy a new one they say.
Thanks.
