For me the nightmare began last night. I was on duty at the station and I looked down and the App Store application informed me there was an update to one of my apps. Since it was late at night and I was unlikely to get a call I decided to go ahead and update through the iPhone. When the application looked to be about 90% percent or more installed the iPhone suddenly rebooted. I got to the Apple logo and that was a far as it got. I let it sit there for about a half hour and then gave up on the phone making it through the boot process. I tried a hard reboot but again, the phone would not make it through the boot process.
My next thought was to get it hooked up to my Mac and see if I perform a restore. No go on that. iTunes would not recognize it. So, I took the last resort and that was to do a DFU restore (Information on how to do this will be at the bottom of this page). Soon I got the image of a USB cable and the iTunes logo and iTunes recognized the phone and offered to do a firmware/software restore. At this point I thought my troubles were over. After the restore the phone would boot and all my apps, music, video and contacts were back and the phone started to operate normally. Wishful thinking, the phone soon locked up again and would not respond so it was back to the DFU restore process. I did this a total of three times before I decided I needed to do a little net investigating. Well, in my search I came across a post in Apple’s own discussion forums. Seems I’m not the only one with this issue.
So, where am I at now? After doing some reading online I have decided not to sync my applications through iTunes and I am not going to download anything through the App Store on the iPhone that isn’t produced by a major software developer, ie. Apple, EA, Sega, Vivendi. I will also do this slowly. Download an app or group of apps and then run the phone through it’s normal use to determine if it is going to lock up before moving on.
I will posts updates for anyone reading about the pitfalls or triumphs I encounter in this long and tedious process. Of course, Apple could save me the trouble of having to do this by releasing a firmware or software update but I don’t see that happening any time soon.
To Perform a hard reboot of your iPhone, do the following;
Hold the Power button and the Home button down until the phone reboots.
When the phone shuts off, release the buttons.
Turn the phone on as you normally would.
To place the phone in Recovery Mode;
Turn your phone off.
While holding down the Home button, plug your iPhone into your computer via your USB cable.
Continue hold the Home button until an iTunes dialog informs you the phone is in recovery mode.
Follow the on screen instructions to reformat and restore your phone.
To place the phone in DFU Recovery Mode;
Plug your iPhone into your computer via your USB cable.
Turn your phone off.
Hold the power button and the home button, after ~ 7 seconds release the power button but continue to hold the home button. Your phone’s display should not turn on.
iTunes should pop up a dialog box once it detects your phone.
Follow the on screen instructions to reformat and restore your phone.
Note – This method more or less bypasses your phone’s normal boot process allowing your to do a more through restore that is very useful with downgrading or upgrading your phone’s firmware.
This blog post has generated a lot of interest as well as hits and I would like to hear more about your iPhone woes. I believe getting your troubles with the iPhone out there in the open for the public to read helps make Apple aware of any shortcomings this phone has and prompts them to fix them as soon as possible. It’s in their best interest to ensure the public’s opinion of this device is a positive one. Please consider clicking the link below and posting your story in our forums for others to read. Thanks!
Welcome to the last page on the Internet. This has to be the last page because I don’t think you would be here if it wasn’t. You have browsed to every other page on the Internet and now you are here because you have read everything else. Well, as long as you are here I will try to entertain you as best I can. Some of the things you might read about on this site will deal with computers, photography, gaming and rescue but I will undoubtedly rant on some off the wall topics every once in a while. So, sit back. Do a little reading on the minutiae of my life and hopefully you’ll get a good laugh out of it from time to time. I’d thank you for stopping by but we both know you didn’t have any where else to be! :)

Spoke with Apple iPhone Tech Support this evening at around 8PM this evening. He claims the majority of his support calls this evening have been about this issue. I called to verify I would not be charged for downloading an application through the iPhone App Store that I had previously purchased and he offered up that bit of info. Stay tuned for more…

Update:
Apple released iTunes 7.7.1 today. I have not installed the update yet and I can find very little on what this updates fixes or resolves. I have reports that it does not seem to fix any issues for iPhone 3G user.
On another note, after several hours of phone use with no issues, I have decided to install more applications. I have had no crashes or hiccups with the first set. The ones I have installed now are as follows;
AirMe
myLite
Recorder
HoldEm
Labyrinth
Units
Trism
Pandora

Update:
Still going strong. No hard crashes or lock ups during boot. I am still not using iTunes to sync my apps. I now loaded the following apps onto the phone in addition to those listed above;
Epocrates Rx
Lumnia
NetNewsWire
PhoneSaber
WeatherBug
iChoose
Shazam
Cube Runner
Mobile Banking
Aurora Feint
NetSketch
As always, I will update here if this latest group of installs bricks the phone.

Update:
Well, it looks like I am going to have to sync my phone with iTunes. I want to be able to get new podcasts and video on my phone and if I don’t transfer the app from the phone to iTunes they will be deleted from the phone. Let’s hope that it was bad code from an app or two and not iTunes that was bricking my phone.

Thx for the tip on how to put it into DFU mode. This phone is really turning out to be unreliable. I’m almost afraid to rely to heavily on it to manage my calandar and other things.
Please keep us updated on the apps. I downloaded Ipray and now I’m sitting here trying to restore.

Thanks for the comments. I will try to update this post again this evening. I have been horribly busy at work with the semester about to begin and haven’t had time to post.
Will try to get a real update up tonight.

Thanks for the tip on DFU.
I was updating an iPhone software app and was using SMS when my iPhone stopped responding. I waited for a couple of minutes and tried to turn off/on my phone and reboot it but it stuck at the Apple logo. I waited about five minutes and still it sat at the logo. I have had the phone for two and a half weeks and this is my first need for DFU – not to mention the other two restores I had to do.
This phone is made unreliable because of the app store and the process it goes through to update and install apps with iTunes, etc. Over a million phones sold and Im sure the majority of everyone has had to do a restore or reboot of some kind. You would think that Apple could have made the memory the apps lauched in a protected state.
The quality of this deployement is really bad. I’m really thinking of taking this back. Think its possible or should I wait for another update 2.0.3? :/
My stats are 1 DFU and now after that I DO have to do a restore so thats 3 restores now.

I was doing some thing similar when I had to do my first restore. I was updating an app and tried launching Safari. It seems that when the phone is updating an app or performing some other OS operation, it becomes very unstable and prone to corruption that necessitates a restore/recovery.

This issue is not related to any particular apps but to the aggregate number and size of your apps in total. It can be fixed without a complete restore, if you have SSH installed. Google for the words “iphone mobilewatchdog” (without the quotes) for the technique.

I do believe the issues with the iphone locking up is due to multitaksing while its downloading and installing apps via wifi or updates. This is very disconcerting as it is claimed by apple that it can multitask and to date i have seen very little of the mutltasking that they claim. Prehaps this new update thats released today will allow us to multitask. Well its almost 4 am and I do hope that my paperweight will be functional very soon. Thanks Gecko for your help in posting the DFU commands. peace

Was in the middle of a sync on my 3G – downloading/updating podcasts and APP updates through the iTunes store, when the phone received some text messages. This froze the phone and iTunes, I am now at the frozen white Apple symbol – even after attempting a re-boot and recovery mode, it stays with a solid apple symbol. This has been for an hour now, anybody know how long the recovery or DFU recovery takes – can it be many hours! Love to hear an answer or SOLUTION!

Bubba…
Be sure to place your iPhone in Airplane mode before running an update up syncing. This will prevent phone calls or text messages from interrupting the process.
Other than that, the recovery process for me takes about a half hour. Any long than that and you should start again.

There IS such a thing as a stupid question. If you ask a question and you provide little to no information for anyone to help you I won’t even allow the comment to be posted.

Just read through your post, and I found it very informative. Keepup the good work.
Well here goes my dellimer. On a very joyful sunday afternoon, I decided to update the music library on my iPhone 3G (after installing some third party apps to the phone), without knowing that I was about to send my iPhone to its’ DOOM!!! During the process of updating my iPhone library, the status bar at the top of the iTunes stoftware indicated that it was backingup the iPhone but apparently it got stuck. So I decided to restart my phone, but it kept doing the same thing, whenever I tried to update the music library on the phone. so I decieded to hard reset the phone. That was when the main problem started. The iPhone just refused to boot. It just got stuck at the apple boot logo. Then I decided to suff the web for some answers, so I ended up here, and I got the informtion on how to restore my phone. But I still have one more problem, the iTunes software (9.0) I am running doesn’t want to restore the phone to my customized settings. Any suggestions?
“Seriously, where will apple iPhone be without people like you?!”

OMG…thank you so much!!!
Friday afternoon I was going to erase all settings and data…to sell my iPhone. (I have 2, don’t ask…ha) In the middle of everything, it just got stuck…on the black screen with the apple. I tried EVERYTHING I could think of. iTunes wouldn’t recognize the device.
I did the DFU Recovery Mode thingy…and I am on my way to working again!!!!
YOU ROCK!!!
